The problem we had with this strategy was an infestation of box elder bugs & slugs. Fortunately, hubby is an active guy & doesn’t mind flipping compost.
Such a good writeup! I’m 100% a lazy gardener and appreciate the tips—I’m totally going to start burying directly in the soil. Thanks for reminding me to sow crimson clover!
I've been trying to "lazy garden" some veggies but Im bummed that im not "succeeding" (in quotes because just trying is really succeeding....) I put cardboard down and then compost or top soil and then I put straw but things aren't happening the way I thought :( I think maybe too many slugs are coming for the cardboard among other problems.
OOHH NOOOO! my biggest take away with the cardboard method IS: lay it all out and top it off in the fall before spring planting because there is a higher chance the cardboard will be broken down and easier to plant into. I too haven’t had success with it, it always felt like a magnet for bugs (underground decomposers all the way to slugs!) and not enough room for plants to grow or big storms rip them out because they’re not “rooted” into the ground. This may sound ridiculous BUT don’t be shy in removing the cardboard. if the plants are healthy enough they’ll survive being rearranged 🙈 — ask me how I know. hahah
Hi Beccalynne, I saw your post on supercharging soil and thought you may be interested in my latest post about Nitricity - creating clean fertilizer without all the trade-offs - https://optimistictech.substack.com/p/optimistic-tech-newsletter-nitricity?r=y2n2m
And here I've been thinking vetch was a nuisance! Now I can put it to work for me! This is a great list. "Lazy" gardening is the best.
I wasn't sure how people would take to me calling it 'lazy' 🙈😆
