I've always wanted a lawn alternative and as it happens the ducks and chickens have managed to make short work of the grass at the house we moved into last year. This has made way for some lovely fluffy moss which I'm very pleased about but I do still dream of a chamomile lawn or one with creeping thyme plants.
I love that! I wish we could have fluffy moss but it seems like it never wants to stay. Have you tied plug traying them? I had great success starting creeping thyme in plug trays, then planting them out. I’m guessing the low growing chamomile would be similar as well!
My problem atm is the chickens particularly like to scratch where I’ve done any digging so any fresh plant doesn’t have time to bed in. I’ve been having to build brick raised planters this spring in an attempt to keep them off
Every year we try a new thing, this year it's a blend of thyme and clover with whatever else pops up as surprise. (We have lots of lovely medicinal plants that just grow without intervention - plantain, herb robert etc). A big question for us is how to get the previous occupants' sterile grass lawn out the frontside gone. Spent a fortune on yellow rattle, still not suppressed it.
That is sooo lovely! I am enjoy our native violets as a cover right now but would love to add clover and thyme soon!
Hmm, dig it out or snuff it out with cardboard? I struggle with crab grass and I try to get a lot of it in spring before it matures. It’s not perfect but it makes me feel good 🤣🙈
Might try the cardboard trick. Used it to good effect in the past on a border we wanted to empty our for veggies, maybe it'll help suppress that bloody lawn! 😂😂
Frankly as long as something is actually growing then that’s a bonus...SO many outside spaces are covered in slabs and stone it makes me despair. The idea that you need a low maintenance garden shows how warped society has become.
We should nurture all outside space as tending it soothes our mental health and connects us to the natural world 💚

Aesthetically we need space and rest for our gaze from busy busy business.
And we can sit on a lawn. Walk on a lawn. Play on a lawn. Have tea on a lawn.
Thence to admire the busy busy business around it.
Lawns themselves are high maintenance. I'd rather putter in a veg and flower garden for a couple hours a week and harvest good stuff.💚🌱💚
