Many years ago I had new neighbors move in beside us (and give us a bunch of potatoes off their farm garden that they had no room to store). They used to use this method of disposing of scraps, but they were finding their newly grown potatoes to have those yucky black spots. They consulted an agronomist at the University of Saskatchewan, and he asked if they were throwing any potato scraps in there, and yes they had been. He told them this was the cause, and to never use any part of a potato or the plant in a direct compost method. It must be composted in a seperate pile for a year or two to ensure the black rot doesn't happen.
